Carl Lenz, Vienna

In 1869, Carl Lenz, a Vienna-based machinery manufacturer, applied for two patents: one for "improvements of the velocipede" and the other for "adapting these machines to railway use". The velocipedes described in the patent applications use "wrought-iron tubes to build the frame", a very advanced design for the time.

However, all known Lenz velocipedes are conventional constructions with the frame made from solid wrought iron and the conspicuous spring for front suspension.

Apart form the two velocipedes owned by the Vienna Museum of Technology (one, two), only one further Carl Lenz velocipede is extant; it is part of the collection of the Vösendorf bicycle museum near Vienna and can be seen here.
